Lava Cake is a hybrid strain from the breeding of the ’09 Cookies Thin Mint Cut x Grape Pie. Cannarado Genetics is credited with creating the seeds to grow this OG polyhybrid strain, but Lava Cake is so special because of the blend of the Cookie Fam Thin Mints potency mixed with the elusiveness and flavor of Gage Green Group’s Grape Pie. This expression is commonly also referred to as Lava Cake #11.
Lava Cake Strain History
Lava Cake is frequently run by small-scale cultivators but has also been cultivated at large scale for cultivation by Jungle Boys. An elite sample of Lava Cake flower should express as a tall hunter green or purple nug with an especially steep top point that isn’t subject to foxtailing. Most strains from Cannarado are also known for exceptional and dense trichome development. The strain is recommended by beginner and expert cultivators alike because of its unrelenting potency, exceptional biomass and unique gassy flavor.
In its current incarnation, Lava Cake is most prevalently cultivated and sold by Toluca Lake Collective and Jungle Boys in California, who also offered Lava Cake #3 and #7 phenos that were a cross of High Octane x Wedding Cake. Lava Cake is also a parent to Jungle Lava (Jungle Cake x Lava Cake) and Lava Kush (Jungle Lava x TK Bx1). Additionally, there’s a version of Lava Cake by 707 Seed Bank that is a cross of ’09 Cookies Thin Mint Cut x 707’s Chemdawg IBL.

Lava Cake Strain Effects
As Thin Mint Cookies is one of the parents of Lava Cake, most expressions retain a potent and long-lasting body high effect that could be colloquially classified as an indica-leaning hybrid. Most users report experiencing a couch-locking body high and supreme relaxation, and also a little bit of cerebral effect from the Grape Pie part of the lineage.
This strain as expressed is uncommon in medical markets and rare overall. While an atypical choice for medical patients, they may find medicinal use in the relaxation and euphoric effects for anxiety and depression.
Lava Cake Strain Common Terpenes
Lava Cake generally appears similar to its Thin Mint parent through its expression of a large spearhead-shaped bud with lime green and purple hues, moderate resin production and scattered orange pistils. Buds are generally quite dense and compact with only one calyx layer summit. Consumers should expect scents of doughy sweetness, sweet kush gas and undertones of sweet grape.
Lava Cake typically expresses humulene and myrcene as its dominant terpenes, with some reports declaring trace amounts of caryophyllene. Some cartridges labeled Lava Cake might contain mixtures of geraniol, derived from geranium plants, to emulate the scent and flavor.
Growing Lava Cake Strain
Lava Cake can be found in both seed and clone forms. Cultivators that choose to grow Lava Cake from cut will have a predetermined expression, while cultivators who choose the seed route will likely have to conduct a pheno hunt to find expressions different than the most Cookies-dominant phenos. Indoors, Lava Cake brings relatively high yields from a single or multi-topped bush and typically takes 56-63 days to flower.
